Biography

Joaquim Vila is professor of Strategic Management and academic director of IESE's Executive Program on Management of Innovation (Focused programs). He acts as head of the Business Information Center at IESE.

Prof. Vila has a Ph.D. in Strategic Management, from the Management Department of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. His research focuses on Strategic Management of High-Technology companies in the US Biotechnology field.

Prof. Vila has worked as a Research Fellow in the Reginald Jones Center for Management Policy, Strategy and Organization of the Wharton School, Philadelphia, and as Research Associate in the Management and Technology Program of the Wharton School.

Prof. Vila works regularly with a number of national and international companies as instructor in executive education programs and consultant on issues related to management of innovation (with a focus on strategy and organizing for innovation as well as an integrative approach to build a culture of innovation), organizational innovation (with a focus on the business federation and other organization forms to foster flexibility and speed in modern corporations) and renewal of the strategy formulation systems (with a focus on developing strategic thinking capabilities among middle managers). He has worked with recently national and international corporations such as Roche Diagnostics, Amgen, Nutrexpa, Uniland, APLI, Telefónica, Henkel, Nestlé, AUSA, Chupa Chups and InterSport.

Prof. Vila has published in the areas of strategy making, organizational design and innovation. His current research focuses on two topics: how to nurture a culture of innovation, and how to improve managerial action on a daily basis through strategic thinking and organizational renewal. He has served as country representative for Spain in the Management and Technology Division, Academy of Management.
