The Global Economic Picture The introductory session will provide a general outlook of the global economic scene. It will touch upon issues such as: the European response to the challenges of productivity and the enlargement; the sustainability of the current global imbalances; and the necessary policies to achieve a relatively smooth adjustment process. This session will be the backdrop to the debates that will follow.
Competing Globally Through Innovation More than any other, the technological sector experiences the constant need to innovate. Germany is number one in Europe in exports. The speed at which new ideas are thought up, built into products and then adopted by their customer base is spectacular. Efficient knowledge management is a powerful ally in this process.
Fostering Entrepreneurial Spirit Germany’s true economic powerhouse is its Mittelstand (small and medium-sized enterprises), often called the hidden champions. Quite often, these companies are little known outside their local community. Nevertheless they form the foundation of the German economy, employ more people than the German multinationals combined and through their entrepreneurial spirit foster innovation which later finds its way into cars, machine tools and other best sellers. Their situation is burdened by the fact that the Mittelstand is very highly diversified and has no counterpart outside of Germany. This leads to an under-representation in Brussels resulting in regulations that are often detrimental to the development of these companies. In this panel, a group of Mittelstand CEOs will discuss the challenges of keeping the entrepreneurial spirit alive in owner-managed companies.
Managing Risk and Security in Global Business Companies with international experience and ambition need to understand and monitor the risks they face in all corners of the planet, since the implications for security are a truly global issue.
