Opus Dei is a personal prelature of the Catholic Church, whose mission is to help people turn their work and daily activities into occasions for growing closer to God, for serving others and for improving society. It was founded in 1928 by St. JosemarÃa Escrivá.
The prelature seeks to remind people that all Christians, whatever their background or situation, should cooperate to solve the global problems of society with tolerance and respect. The members of this institution carry out their work in the ordinary circumstances of their lives, within the diverse sectors of society in which they live and work.
Opus Dei seeks to contribute to the mission of the Church worldwide. It encourages all Christians to live consistently with their faith by making the Gospel present in all human endeavors and by serving God and society with the greatest possible competence.
In order to fulfill this mission, Opus Dei complements the work of local churches by offering classes, talks, retreats and pastoral care that help people develop their personal spiritual life and apostolate. This spiritual assistance is offered to members and others who request it.
Opus Dei's headquarters are in Rome. Currently, over 80,000 people from every continent belong to the prelature. More information on http://www.opusdei.org/
