Faculty

Dr. Paddy Miller - Academic Director

Paddy Miller is a professor in the department of Managing People in Organizations at IESE. He teaches in the areas of leadership and change management, focusing on leading change in multinational organizations in the transition to globalization. Among the companies and organizations that have used his services are Bulgari, IBM, Henkel, Volkswagen, Lufthansa, Standard Life Scotland and Sun Microsystems. He has worked with CEOs and their management teams in Europe, Africa and the United States. He has taught on international programs offered by the business schools of Harvard, Michigan, Cape Town and the University of Virginia. Last year he won an award from the American Academy of Management for his work in the field of globally distributed teams.

Helen Zille
Helen Zille is the Mayor of Cape Town and the leader of the Democratic Alliance political party, South Africa’s official opposition party. Zille began her career as a political journalist for the Rand Daily Mail, and while working there, she became famous for exposing the truth behind Steve Biko’s death. She also gathered evidence for the Goldstone Commission, which investigated attempts to destabilize the Western Cape before the 1994 elections. In the 2006 municipal elections, the Democratic Alliance became the largest party in Cape Town with 42% of the vote, ahead of the African National Congress (ANC).

Barry Standish
Barry Standish is a Senior Lecturer in Business Administration at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business. He is a leading expert in economic impact modelling. Modelling projects he has been involved in include estimating the size of the casino gaming market and the economic impact of the introduction of new water tariffs in the Nelspruit area. He recently conducted an assessment of the economic impact of the Cape Town Convention Centre and his latest project is an assessment of the economic impact of the introduction of toll roads.

Dave Kaplan
Professor Dave Kaplan is the Alan Gray Professor of Business - Government Relations at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, and Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Cape Town. From 2000-2003 he was Chief Economist at the Department of Trade and Industry. David Kaplan’s areas of specialization include innovation, science and technology policy, industrial policy, the economics of technical change, the economic history of South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, development economics, multinational enterprises, entrepreneurship and SMME development, and the telecommunications industry.

Brian Kantor
Brian Kantor joined the faculty of the University of Cape Town in 1964, and over the years served as Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and as Director of the School of Economics. His academic interests and publications focused on Monetary and Financial Economics. He has written two books: South African Economic Issues, (Juta) Cape Town, 1982 and Understanding Capitalism, (Boyers-Bowerdean) New York- London, 1996. He has been on leave from his position as Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town since June 2001, when he began working full time as an Investment Strategist for Investec Securities.  He has served as a consultant to a number of companies, including Volkswagen (SA) Ltd, Rightford, Searle-Tripp, and Makin (later Ogilvy Mather SA), BMW SA. He served as founding Chairman of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront (Pty) Ltd from 1988 to 2001, during which time he led the redevelopment of Cape Town’s historic harbour.

Tony Leon
Anthony James Leon is a South African politician and the former leader of South Africa’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance. He has a degree in law from the University of the Witwatersrand where he became a lecturer in the Law Department in 1986. Tony Leon began his involvement in politics in 1974 as an organiser for the Progressive Party, the predecessor of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party became the Democratic Alliance in 2000. In 1986 Leon was elected to the Johannesburg City Council where he became leader of the opposition. In 1989 he was elected to Parliament representing the Democratic Party. From 1990 to 1994, he chaired the Democratic Party’s Bill of Rights Commission and served as a delegate to the multi-party negotiations that led to the end of apartheid and the establishment of a multi-party democracy in 1994. In 1999 he became Leader of the Opposition when the Democratic Party won 38 seats in South Africa’s second democratic elections. Tony Leon retired as leader of the Democratic Alliance in May 2007, but will keep his seat in parliament until his term expires in 2009.

Denis Davis
Denis Davis is a Justice of the Cape High Court, editor of ConstitutionalLaw.co.za, and one of South Africa’s most active  public speakers. Appointed a Judge of the High Court in October 1998, Denis Davis was a technical legal advisor to the Multi-party Negotiating Forum and the Constitutional Assembly, two bodies responsible for drafting the final Constitution. He has also served as a television presenter for the programs “Future Imperfect” and “Consitutional Court”. Denis Davis has authored or co-authored a number of books on subjects such as criminology, estate planning and constitutional law.

Peter Bruce
Peter Bruce is Editor of the South African newspaper Business Day. When Business Day was launched in 1986, it was the country's first mainstream business daily. The paper covers corporate reporting, black economic empowerment, economic policy, corporate governance and financial markets. It is co-owned by Johnnic Publishing and London-based Pearsons plc. The average number of daily readers is over 100,000.

Mike Makaab
Mike Makaab is Managing Director of the International Soccer Division at Prosport International, an International Sports Management company. Mike has been involved in the sport for over thirty years, as a player, coach, and manager and now as South Africa's first licensed FIFA Agent. His coaching highlights include winning both the National Soccer League and African Club Champions titles with the Orlando Pirates of South Africa in 1994/1995, and serving as technical advisor to the victorious Bafana Bafana side that won the African Cup of Nations in 1996. With offices in Europe and Africa, Prosport Soccer represents over 200 players in Europe, Africa and Asia. Prosport is clearly the leading soccer agency on the African continent and is now making inroads into both the European and Asian markets.

Bruce MacDonald
Bruce MacDonald is Director of the Program for Management Development and the Executive Management Program at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business. His areas of expertise are marketing, executive and management development, the application of entrepreneurial principles and business creativity. MacDonald has also worked as a school teacher, lorry driver, tour bus courier, computer programmer, restaurateur and director of a manufacturing company. He is currently working on initiatives to extend the reach of the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business into Africa, including a multinational consortium management development program in Africa and an Africa-wide financial services program.

Vuyo Jack
Vuyo Jack is co-founder and Executive Chairman of Empowerdex. He also lectures in Financial Accounting at Wits on a part-time basis. Vuyo Jack grew up in Dube, Soweto.  He studied accounting, which he believes forms a critical basis for informed economic decision-making because it is the central measure of business performance. Vuyo was appointed member of the dti's BEE Task Team in 2003. He has advised both government departments and various corporations on BEE matters.
