Xavier Vives, Academic Director
Professor of Economics and Financial Management

Doctor in Economics and Business, Universitat Autňnoma de Barcelona

Xavier Vives’ fields of interest include industrial organization and regulation, the economics of information, and banking and financial economics. Prof. Vives has published articles in major international journals and is author of Oligopoly Pricing: Old Ideas and New.  He is currently the editor of the Journal of the European Economic Association and co-editor of the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy. Prof. Vives has consulted on competition, regulation and corporate governance issues for the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the European Commission, in addition to major private corporations.

Jordi Gual
Professor of Economics
Ph.D. in Economics, University of California-Berkeley
Doctor of Economic and Business Science, University of Barcelona

Jordi Gual is currently chief economist and head of research of the savings bank "La Caixa." His research focuses on applied industrial economics, with a particular emphasis on competition policy, telecommunications, and banking.  Prof. Gual has consulted for major industrial and financial institutions, in addition to international organizations such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the International Monetary Foundation, the World Bank and the European Commission.  He is author and co-author of several books, including Integration of European Banking: The Way Forward CEPR; Building a Dynamic Europe: The Key Policy Debates, and Liberalization of Network Industries: Conflicting Priorities.

Núria Mas
Professor of Economics
Ph.D. in Economics, Harvard University
 
Núria Mas’ research interests foucs on the health care sector and public economics, including the economics of the pharmaceutical industry and the sustainability of the welfare state and pension systems. She also studies the economic impact of micro policies, such as new labor regulation and health regulation. Prior to joining IESE, Prof. Mas served as an associate at Lehman Brothers International. Her recent publications include “Industry Characteristics and Anti-competitive Behavior: Evidence from the EU,” co-authored with Jordi Gual, and “Managed Care and the Safety Net: More Pain for the Uninsured.”

Giulio Federico
Giulio Federico is vice-president of the business consulting firm, CRA International. He has particular expertise in areas of competition and regulation in the energy and telecommunications markets, and has consulted for both private companies and governments on acquisitions, dominance and market design in these sectors. He has worked on several merger cases, including Sonae/PT, EDP/GDP (CFI Appeal), Deutsche Borse/Euronext/LSE, and Oracle/PeopleSoft, as well as several Article 81 and 82 cases.

Carles Esteva-Mosso
Carles Esteva-Mosso is head of the merger policy unit in the Competition Directorate General of the European Commission, and a faculty member of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics.  From 1999 and 2004, he served as a cabinet member for the European Commissioner for Competition Policy, advising on merger control, antitrust and cartel policy.

Jorge Padilla
Jorge Padilla is the managing director of LECG, an international consulting firm specializing in independent expert testimony and analysis, and strategic consulting services for private and public sectors.  Mr. Padilla’s area of expertise includes competition policy and intellectual property issues for a wide range of industries, including retail electricity, media, telecommunications, entertainment and technology.
