Shortening distances, Improving relations, Discovering opportunities
Barcelona, November 10-11, 1999
The processes of economic aperture undertaken by the majority of Latin American countries during the course of this decade, have propitiated a massive disembarkation of foreign capital, a great deal of which is from Europe and especially Spain. This investment, particularly significant in large energy and telecommunications firms, as well as financial institutions, has opened a new stage in the relations between the two continents.
Europe looks to Spain to better understand the characteristics of Latin America and the differences existing between the Latin American countries. The IESE - CELA European - Latin American Business Conference was an excellent occasion for analyzing this phenomenon in depth and establishing standards for relations between both markets.

Among the participating companies were many representatives of this new stage, such as Endesa, which by June of this year had made a cumulative investment of 7,400 million dollars. Its president, Rodolfo Martín Villa, emphasized the position of the Spanish company as the electricity concern with the greatest presence in Latin America.
Another important figure at the Conference was Santiago Foncillas, President of Dragados and Vice-President of BSCH. He analyzed the evolution of the globalization process in the region and the role of the Spanish and local SMEs as suppliers and service providers for large enterprises. The expansion attained in the region by large Spanish companies such as Telefónica or Gas Natural was dramatic. Small and medium-sized enterprises were also represented. Of special relevance was the speech by the President of the Latin American Network of the European Confederation of Employers -UNICE- Jaime Echevarría, President of Viscofán and Industrias Alimentarias de Navarra.
The role played in research by intra-regional investment carried out by Latin American companies such as the Pérez Companc Group of Argentina, CSN of Brazil, Bavaria of Mexico or EDC-Electricidad de Caracas, of Venezuela, was discussed in depth.
In addition to businesspeople and top executives from both sides of the Atlantic, distinguished Latin American and Spanish politicians attended, as did officials of the European Commission, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Organization of Iberian-American States.
