Impact of Long-term Care and Dependency on the Welfare State. The Spanish Case
Núria Mas and Joan Costa-Font
The rapid aging of its population is one of the most important challenges that the European welfare state is facing nowadays. The objective of this paper is: firstly, to study whether the dependency from a potential increase on chronic conditions has taken place in Spain. Secondly, once we have established the “real” needs for dependency care, we want to analyze how the rise in female labor supply has affected the demand for long-term care.
International Comparison of Healthcare Systems for the Treatment of Diabetes
Núria Mas and David Cutler
Building on the results we set out in our previous joint paper, we want to investigate in more detail the key factors for success in the management of chronic diseases and, in particular, in the treatment and control of diabetes. To do this, we will look at data from the US, Canada and Spain. Our initial hypothesis considers that those countries with a more integrated healthcare system are better able to manage and coordinate the efforts across different types of healthcare providers in order to obtain better results.
Has the 100 € Policy Increased Female Participation in the Spanish Labor Market?
Núria Mas and Cristina Fernández
Many women abandon their career completely after birth. In order to encourage women to return to work after giving birth, in 2003 the Spanish Government approved to grant a one hundred euros payment per month to working mothers with kids less than 3 years of age (Law 46/2002). The objective of this paper is to evaluate if the “hundred euros pay” policy has been able to fulfil its original purpose: increase the labor market attachment of working mothers. We will also try to quantify the costs of the measure in order to compare them with the benefits obtained.
