IESE is proud to host the ECGI’s 6th General Assembly. The European Corporate Governance Institute is an international scientific non-profit organization that provides a forum for debate and dialogue between academics, legislators and practitioners, focusing on major corporate governance issues and thereby promoting best practice.
This year, its Annual Lecture will be open to ECGI’s members and IESE alumni. It will be a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with one of the most well-known professors in corporate governance and financial development.
Luigi Zingales is the Robert C. McCormack Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance at the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago. In 2003 he won the Bernacer Prize for the best European young financial economist. Introduction and Welcome
Jordi Canals Professor of Economics and Strategic Management
Keynote speech: "Board elections: Is Italy a Model for the Rest of Us?"
Italy is known for its exquisite food, wonderful monuments, and sleek design. But it is not known for the quality of its corporate governance system and even less so for the quality of its laws protecting minority investors. Nevertheless, in Italy one of the most interesting experiments in corporate governance is taking place. A law introduced the requirement that at least one Board Member of every listed company be appointed by minority shareholders. Does this system work? While it is too early to be able to provide a systematic analysis, Professor Zingales will discuss costs and benefits of this system and the challenges ahead.

The lecture and the subsequent debate will be conducted under the Chatham House rule .
