2.2- Sources of charts and other images


2.2.1 GMID

GMID contains historical, current and forecast statistics from Euromonitor on international markets and economic series. With a few clicks, GMID can convert tables of figures into a number of different types of chart in jpeg format. The following gives an idea of what is possible:

• A column chart showing annual retail volume of the Belgian in-house audio market, forecasted to 2008.
• A line graph comparing annual cinema trips per capita since 1995 in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
• A 3D bar chart comparing annual disposable income per capita in China, India, Vietnam and Thailand.

To create a line graph comparing cinema trips since 1995 in Australia, NZ and Canada:

• Access GMID at Library > E-Resources > By Alphabetical order .
• On the Select geography screen expand Australasia and highlight Australia and New Zealand. Then expand North America and highlight Canada. Check that the three countries are now displayed under Selected items on the right.
• Switch to the Select category screen. Expand Leisure and Lifestyle, then Cultural Indicators and so on until you can highlight Annual cinema trips per capita. Check that the data category is displayed under Selected items on the right.
• Scroll down and hit Run search.
• Click Load all statistical data.
• Under Change Selection on the left, select Add/Remove years. Tick 1995 onwards and View.
• To convert the data to a graph, click the grey Pie Chart icon from the menu of icons. (To view the data for just one of the countries as a graph, use the bar chart icon found with the relevant row in the table).
• Change the presentation to a line graph using the menu beneath the chart.
• Right click > Save as… to use the chart in another package.

2.2.2 Business Insights

Business Insights is an international market reports service covering Consumer goods, Energy, Financial Services, Healthcare and Technology markets. The reports are full of illustrative charts and diagrams which can be saved and used in other applications.

• Access Business Insights at Library > E-Resources > By Alphabetical order .
• Locate a report covering the market that interests you: either enter a search term in the search box or List reports and browse by category.
• Having selected a report, click on the Figures tab to see all charts contained within the report.
• Right click on the chart you want and select Save as… (or select and drag it into your document).

2.2.3 Amadeus and Sabi

Amadeus contains company accounts, activity information, structure and other data for 250 000 public and private European companies. Sabi contains the same kind of data for 600 000 Spanish companies. Data and charts can be accessed for individual companies or users can analyse and chart regions, sectors and peer groups. Some of the chart possibilities include:

• Evolution of a company’s gearing ratio over ten years
• Tree diagram of a company’s structure
• Graphic representation of a company’s balance sheet
• A pie chart illustrating segmentation of Polish companies by number of employees
• A pie chart showing % of total sales of a peer group by members of the group

Amadeus and Sabi can be accessed via Library > E-Resources > By Alphabetical order . Create graphs after retrieving the appropriate data with a search, either by clicking on the Graphs button (bottom right of screen) or by clicking on the various chart icons that appear when graphing options are available.

To save the charts, left click once on the image. A set of icons appears – choose the Save icon.

2.2.4 Factiva

As well as 9000 international news sources, Factiva contains daily, weekly and monthly price series of shares, funds, corporate bonds, indices and currencies. You can easily turn all of these series into charts and add indices or peer companies for comparison.

• Access Factiva via Library > E-Resources > By Alphabetical order .
• Select the Companies/Markets section of Factiva and click on Charting.
• Select the quote, dates, chart type and other variables and Redraw chart.
• Once the chart has been drawn, scroll down and click on the small grey print icon at the bottom of the screen.
• The chart opens in a new window. Right click on the chart and select Save Picture As…
• The file format is .png which can be used in Word and Powerpoint.

Indexed photographs from Reuters Picture Agency (1996 onwards) covering all national and international news can also be found on Factiva. On the Factiva search screen, select the Source category Pictures and enter some search terms to filter your search. To use Reuters Pictures in a presentation or report, you must contact Reuters. 2.2.5 Thomson One Banker

For more sophisticated share price charts, including moving average, stochastics, Bollinger bands, momentum, overbought and oversold etc., try Thomson One Banker. Coverage is international.

• Access Thomson One via Library > E-Resources > By Alphabetical order .
• Search for the company using the Name/Key Lookup or Search for companies options on the left hand side, and display the company overview.
• Click on the Prices tab and then choose from the options under Interactive Charts (basic prices), Time Series Charts or Technical Analysis. All options let you add comparison companies or indices to your chart, change dates, display style etc.
• Right click and Save Picture As…. The format is .png.
