2.5- International financial markets and investment


Thomson One

Thomson One is the library’s key resource for easy access to equity and index data for the world’s markets. It includes 8575 stocks together with general and industry-specific indices from emerging markets.

To find a stock:
• Make sure you have the Companies tab selected (grey tool bar top left)
• Click Name/Key lookup if you know what company you want, or Search for companies to look by criteria
• Once you have retrieved the company, click the Prices tab for access to data

To find an index:
• Select the Indices tab on the grey tool bar
• Click Index Lookup if you know its name or MSCI index search to view indices by criteria. The latter lets you view and select indices relating to emerging markets.

Datastream

Datastream is a sophisticated research tool for international financial markets analysis, and contains up to 15 years’ time series of equity, index, bond, commodity, currency and other financial instruments. Some familiarisation with the interface may be necessary before Datastream can be used successfully. An online manual is available.

Access:
Datastream is available in the Library Documentation Center only.

ISI Emerging Markets

Contains equity, index and currency quotes and time series from Reuters Datascope for the 60 countries covered. Quotes are updated once per day after the markets close. Data can be downloaded to Excel or displayed as a graph.

In addition, some analysts reports are available in pdf format. These are mostly from local investment specialists (for the reports of big international names such as J.P Morgan see Investext Plus below), but many are in English.

Investext Plus

Contains over 700,000 pdfs of reports from top investment analysts and banks worldwide. Many analysts, including Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, Citigroup, Ing Bank and Credit Suisse First Boston, publish reports on investment conditions in emerging markets. Try entering “emerging markets” or “name of country” in the keyword search box. Alternatively you can search for a specific subject company or analyst.

NB. New reports are embargoed for five days on this service, which is intended for academic and research customers rather than investors.
