2.2- Statistical data

World Tourism Organization data

The UN-recognized organization for setting and publishing international tourist statistics is the World Tourism Organization.

Some WTO data is available free on the Facts & Figures section of the World Tourism Organization website . IESE Library does not have a password for their restricted data.

WTO data is also available via GMID. The following data is available for around 200 countries covering periods of up to 30 years (including forecasts):

• Length of tourist stay (various breakdowns)
• Tourism expenditure and receipts
• Accomodation statistics (bed places and bed occupancy rates)
• Tourist arrivals (by method of transport and by region)

GMID is available from Library > E-Resources > By alphabetical order .

Use the menu search within GMID to select your geographic area of interest and data category. You can select multiple areas and categories. Once you have Run search you can change the display currency or units (e.g. view bed places per 1000 people) and download data to Excel or display as a graph.

National official statistics websites

Most countries or regions collect and publish official (government) statistics which usually include inbound and outbound tourism data and may include more detailed information depending on the country’s statistical programs. Official statistics for Spain from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística can be found at http://www.ine.es/ .

The INE has a useful list of official statistical bodies for other countries here: http://www.ine.es/en/estaing_en.htm#europa .

Tourist industry statistics

Associations representing the tourism sector (tourist boards, tourist offices) in individual countries (or US States) also tend to collect and publish industry statistics for free. Try the following list to access possible sources of tourist data:
