 | Muhammad Yunus: Problem solving above profit-making
"People ask what was the crucial factor in developing the bank and the answer is that I know nothing about banking and if I did I would have followed their rules," said Muhammad Yunus, speaking at a special session of the Continuous Education Program held on IESE's Barcelona campus in the presence of Queen Sofia of Spain and Crown Prince Felipe. Yunus, who with his Grameen Bank in Bangladesh more or less invented the concept of micro-credits and micro-finance, added: "I did the opposite of conventional wisdom and it worked.  | Africa Emerges: IESE Forum Spotlights Continent
Africa was among the fastest-growing regions in the world during 2001-08, with an average growth of 6 percent a year, according to Abdul B. Kamara of the African Development Bank. Kamara who spoke during the IESE forum "Emerging Africa and the Global Business Revolution." Macroeconomic and structural reforms, reduced conflict, improved political climate, and a benign external environment, which included a commodity boom and search of foreign investors' for new markets, led to the continent's highest growth in decades, Kamara said.  | A ball of a time for Madrid alumni!
For a second year running, the annual IESE paddle tennis tournament could count on the sponsorship of Telecyl Comunicación & Eventos, for the competition which was held on Saturday 19th June at "Racket City" in Madrid. Over one hundred alumni participated in the event, among which the winners were Juan Manuel de Toro (MBA-88) and Ignacio Ramos (PDG-B-10) for the male category and Elena Martín (MBA-09) and María del Mar de Ros (MBA-09) in the female category.  | Latin American Alumni Reunion debut
IESE Alumni Association makes a bold debut in Panamá where it will be holding a Latin American Alumni Reunion to bring the geographically distant, but culturally close continent closer to IESE. Alumni from various Latin American countries are encouraged to meet in this "halfway point" for the two-day conference. Beginning with an inaugural keynote speech by guest speaker D. Alberto Vallarino, Economy and Finance Minister for Panama, the reunion combines academic sessions with professors Julia Prats and Pedro Videla and networking activities including a tour of the Panama Canal and an excursion into the jungle.  | In the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics
Alumni from the UK chapter will have the opportunity to hear first-hand about how preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games in London are progressing. Charles Wijeratna, Director of Commercial Negotiations at The London Organization Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), will be speaking about the business and economic aspects of hosting an Olympic Games and the fundraising and sponsorship campaign behind this injection of finances. IESE Prof. Mario Capizzani will be moderating the session in which Chris Daniels, president of the UK Chapter and Head of London 2012 Activation for the Wholesale Division of Lloyds Banking Group, will also participate. | | Read more |
 | Antonio Dávila in Warsaw: How to Design Innovative Companies?
On June 22, Prof. Antonio Davila met with IESE Alumni in Warsaw in the Porczynski Gallery. The session presented a framework on how to design companies that systematize innovation and illustrated various concepts with examples from different companies.
