Introduction
Tourism represents both directly and indirectly approximately 10 % of the World’s GDP, and generates 8.4% of total global employment. Spain ranked second in the world in terms of both tourism revenue and number of overseas visitors. Indeed, the tourist industry accounts for 10.8% of Spain’s GDP and 17 percent of its total employment, making it one of the country’s most important sectors. Within Spain, the Balearic Islands have secured a leading position in the industry, as a cluster of leading multinational tourism companies first initiated their activities on the islands. This first International Tourism Summit, promoted by the IESE Balearic Islands Alumni Association Chapter and co-organized by IESE and the OECD, will review the current situation of the industry worldwide, explore the main challenges the sector faces and foresee general future trends.
