 Prof. Bruno Cassiman, IESE Business School

Bruno Cassiman (Ph.D. 1996, Northwestern University) is Professor of Strategy at the Strategic Management Department of IESE Business School in Barcelona and the Herman Daems Chair of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Department of Managerial Economics, Strategy and Innovation at the University of Leuven in Belgium.

His research interests have centered on the economics of strategy and innovation with a particular focus on the connections between science and industry in the innovation process.  His work has been published in several of the leading Economics and Management journals including The American Economic Review, Management Science, Industrial and Corporate Change, Strategic Organization, The European Economic Review, The International Journal of Industrial Organization, The Journal of International Business Studies and, Research Policy. Furthermore, he is the department editor of the Business Strategy department at Management Science and member of the editorial board of Strategic Organization, European Management Review and the Review of Economics and Business. Formerly, he was co-editor of the Spanish Economic Review, and on the editorial boards of the Journal of the European Economic Association and the Journal of Industrial Economics.

He co-edited a book on the relation between mergers and acquisitions and innovation (M&A and Innovation: The Innovation Impact, Edward Elgar 2006) and has been a consultant to the European Commission, the Belgian, Flemish and Catalan governments on matters of innovation policy and to several companies on matters of (innovation) strategy.


Prof. Alfonso Gambardella, U. Bocconi

Degree in Economics from the Università di Genova. MA in Economics from New York University. PhD in Economics from Stanford University.

Professor Alfonso Gambardella is Professor of Management. He studies firm strategy, particularly technology strategy and the impact of innovation on industry structures.  He published on national and international journals. His best known book is Markets for Technology (2001, MIT Press, with A. Arora and A. Fosfuri). He is Co-Editor of Strategic Management Journal (with Sendil Ethiraj and Connie Helfat) and Chair of the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the US Academy of Management. In 2015-6 he was visiting the TIES group (Technology, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy) of the MIT Sloan School of Management, 100 Main Street, E62-438, Cambridge, MA 02142. 


 Prof. Matthew Grennan, Wharton

Matthew Grennan is an Assistant Professor of Health Care Management at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is teaching a new undergraduate course in health care entrepreneurship, and co-teaching an MBA course in health care marketing.

Professor Grennan holds a PhD in Strategy/Economics from the New York University, Stern School of Business. As an Assistant Professor in the Strategic Management area at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, Professor Grennan taught entrepreneurship in the Commerce program and statistical modeling/methods in the PhD program. He has also taught MBA health care economics at the Indian School of Business.

Professor Grennan's researches issues in competitive strategy and industrial organization economics, where he is especially interested in healthcare, business-to-business markets, and innovation. His research has been published in leading journals such as the American Economic Review and Management Science. He is a member of the Academy of Management, American Economics Association, National Bureau of Economic Researc, and Strategy Research Forum.  


 Prof. Maria Guadalupe, INSEAD

Maria Guadalupe is an Associate Professor in the Economics and Political Science department at INSEAD, the Academic Director of the INSEAD Randomized Control Trials (RCT) Lab and a member of the European Competitiveness Initiative at the school. Maria obtained a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics in 2003. Prior to joining INSEAD in 2012, she was an Associate Professor in the Economics and Finance department at Columbia Business School where she held the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Chair in Leadership and Ethics. Maria has also been a visiting scholar at MIT and Princeton and is currently a research fellow at the Center for European Policy Research (CEPR) and the IZA. She is also a member of the Strategy Research Initiative.

Maria has taught MBA and Executive MBA courses on 'Strategy, Structure and Incentives', 'Strategy and Regional Competitiveness', 'Growth and Sustainability in Brazil' as well as PhD courses in 'Industrial Organization' and 'Organizational Economics'.

Her research is on the interactions between firms' organizational choices and markets, with a focus on firm performance. She has studied how globalization and the competitive environment faced by firms shape their internal organizational choices, including pay levels, incentives, executive compensation and hierarchical structures. She has also studied the effect of corporate governance arrangements on firm performance. Her more recent work focuses on how multinationals select their foreign targets and the productivity consequences of the changes in firm boundaries.

Maria's work has been published in top economics, finance and management journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Management Science, Journal of Labor and Economics, and American Economic Journal: Applied. She has been awarded a number of prizes for her contributions to research including the Brattle Distinguished Paper prize awarded by the American Finance Association and the Jaime Fernandez de Araoz prize in Corporate Finance among others. She is also an Associate Editor for Management Science and a Co-Editor for the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy.  


 
 Prof. Michael Ryall, University of Toronto

Michael Ryall is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Economics at Rotman. He holds a PhD in economics from UCLA. Prior to joining the Univ. of Toronto in 2009, he held positions as Assistant Professor at the Univ. of Rochester and Associate Professor at Melbourne Univ., as well as visiting positions at the Management Economics and Decision Sciences Dept. at Northwestern Univ., the Strategy Dept. at London Business School, the Lonergan Research Inst. at the University of Toronto, and Guest Scientist at Max Planck Inst. for Mathematics in the Sciences (Leipzig).

Ryall is interested in the formal theoretical foundations of business strategy. This is a small but rapidly growing area that uses mathematical models to analyze issues relating to firm performance. He has developed theory on value appropriation under competition, economic performance in social networks, subjective rationality, and causal ambiguity. His work has been published in the Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, Harvard Business Review and The B.E. Journal of Theoretical Economics. He wrote Inference and Intervention, a textbook on Bayesian Network modeling.

Ryall has held editorial positions for various journals, and presently serves as Associate Editor at Management Science. He has been awarded numerous teaching and research awards. He was a co-founder of the Strategy Research Forum and the Strategy Research Initiative, the latter for which he served as President from 2012-2014. 


 
Prof. Govert Vroom, IESE Business School

Govert Vroom is an associate professor in the Strategic Management department of IESE. Govert received his Ph.D. from INSEAD in 2005. In 2004, his doctoral proposal was awarded second place in the Organization Science dissertation proposal competition. His doctoral dissertation received the Blackwell Outstanding Dissertation Award for the best doctoral dissertation in the Business Policy and Strategy division of the Academy of Management in 2006.

Govert’s research interests include competitive strategy, corporate diversification, strategy in the networked economy, and entrepreneurship. In his research, he explores how firm characteristics, such as organizational design, ownership structure, and firm objectives, affect managerial decision making and interfirm rivalry. His work has been published in leading scholarly journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. He is editorial board member of the Strategic Management Journal and Strategy Science. He has been elected Chair of the Competitive Strategy interest group of the Strategic Management Society, which role he fulfilled in 2012.
