Longitudinal Investigation of Institutional Dualism: Strategic Responses to Legitimacy Gaps < Back
This paper presents a longitudinal study of four hybrid organizations attempting to repair their legitimacy in a dual institutional environment. We show how and why different sets and temporal combinations of symbolic and substantive actions can discriminate successful and unsuccessful legitimacy reparation strategies. In particular, our study demonstrates that a successful legitimacy reparation strategy can rely on the combination and balance of apparently conflicting logics by presenting and implementing an alternative and more complex organizational model that is supported by the strategic combination of symbolic and substantive actions.
