IESE Prof. Paddy Miller talks with teacher and writer Tal Ben-Shahar about personal happiness and its impact on business performance. An expert on positive psychology and leadership, Ben-Shahar explains that happiness does not mean experiencing a constant stream of positive emotions. Instead, it is deep sense of meaning in life that ultimately leads to business success.
By reducing multitasking and introducing simplicity in our lives - specifically focusing on a single activity one or two hours a day - managers and employees can become more creative and better deal with rising levels of day-to-day complexity. Like race cars, he says, managers need to make systematic pit stops to renew their energy and creativity levels, which will then boost productivity so they can do even more.
