The German executive volunteered to live and work alongside rangers as they patrolled Kenya\u2019s wilderness in search of illegal poaching and logging. Kenya\u2019s elephant population and forests are under threat from black-market trade in bush meat, ivory and timber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWitnessing the beauty of wildlife and the rangers fighting for it every day while being exposed to so many threats and challenges really made me think,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting his hands dirty<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Leave your comfort zone\u201d<\/strong>. That\u2019s one of Sauer\u2019s mottos. And it\u2019s something he has done throughout his career. Working for the German automotive supplier ZF Group, when a role came up as Head of Production for the Asia-Pacific region, he jumped at the chance and moved to China. \u201cIf you get a chance to work abroad, do it,\u201d he says. \u201cIt will totally change you. <strong>You\u2019ll develop a completely new skillset, collect lots of new impressions, and meet people along the way who will leave a mark on you or become your friends&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After three years in Asia, he returned to Germany and got in touch with Raabia Hawa, a Kenyan conservationist who runs the Ulinzi Africa Foundation, a nonprofit focused on ranger welfare and wildlife protection. Sauer explains, \u201cAt that point, I wanted to get more involved than just sitting on my couch watching nature documentaries and donating to organizations at Christmastime\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Little could he have imagined, as he watched the sunrise over his camp, that in a year\u2019s time he would launch a social enterprise, and the hot drink in his hand would be a Kenyan coffee whose purchase would go toward wildlife conservation in the country he had grown to love.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><style>#thegem-divider-69e49269c51b2 {margin-top: 35px !important;}<\/style><div id=\"thegem-divider-69e49269c51b2\" class=\"gem-divider  \" style=\"\" ><\/div>[vc_media_grid grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1615560035971-1c4fe54e-b1fb-3&#8243; include=&#8221;2851,2853,2855&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><style>#thegem-divider-69e49269c51e8 {margin-top: 35px !important;}<\/style><div id=\"thegem-divider-69e49269c51e8\" class=\"gem-divider  \" style=\"\" ><\/div>[vc_column_text css_animation=&#8221;bottom-to-top&#8221;]He signed up for one of her initiatives, Walk With Rangers, which involved two weeks of doing exactly what the name suggests. \u201cIt was a mind-blowing experience,\u201d he says. He would help the rangers find and dismantle animal snares and destroy kilns used to burn trees for charcoal. \u201cWe even caught an illegal logger\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The hot, sweaty, dangerous business of being a ranger impacted him,<\/strong> as the rangers showed him their scars from being attacked by a wild animal or by a local with a machete. And those were the lucky ones who had lived to tell the tale. \u201cIt took me some time to digest all of that.\u201d Even more <strong>disturbing for him to learn was that few of these rangers had any health, life or disability insurance<\/strong> or received any PTSD counselling triggered by a colleague\u2019s death in the line of duty. They lacked basic supplies like boots, tents and GPS devices, and needed more training.<\/p>\n<h3>Brewing up a new business<\/h3>\n<p>This started Sauer thinking: \u201cHow could I generate a sustainable source of funding for the foundation? What product could I sell that\u2019s linked to Kenya and\/or the purpose of wildlife conservation? What\u2019s something that people need, want or do on a daily base that I could link to Kenya and\/or the purpose?\u201d His answer: coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Sauer, who had just completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/executiveeducation.iese.edu\/functional-directors\/program-management-development\/?_ga=2.77581725.924673451.1576567136-763637830.1576567136\">Program for Management Development<\/a> (PMD) at IESE, decided to follow two of his other mottos: \u201cBe the change you want to see in the world\u201d and \u201cFollow the gold and money will follow.\u201d Regarding the first point, he took a sabbatical from his job to set up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulinzi-conservation-coffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ulinzi Conservation Coffee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And with regard to the second, he says: \u201cWhat do you want to do in life? <strong>I believe it\u2019s important to work for a purpose,<\/strong> to contribute to something bigger, to chase a dream (the gold). If you start with that, money will follow\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to sell fair-trade coffee products \u2014 enabling a larger share of the sales price to reach the coffee farmer, contributing to the development and living conditions of the producers\u2019 business, while supporting wildlife and reforestation activities in Kenya through local partners, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkwithrangers.org\/\">Ulinzi Africa Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seedballskenya.com\/\">Seedballs Kenya<\/a>. \u201cEveryone involved gets a fair share \u2014 I believe that\u2019s the only way to do it,\u201d he says.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><style>#thegem-divider-69e49269c5208 {margin-top: 35px !important;}<\/style><div id=\"thegem-divider-69e49269c5208\" class=\"gem-divider  \" style=\"\" ><\/div><div style=''  class=\"gem-quote gem-quote-style-default custom-color-blockqute-mark-added\" ><blockquote  ><strong>&#8220;I wanted to get more involved than just sitting on my couch and donating at Christmastime&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Steffen Sauer.<\/blockquote><span style=color:#ff0000;  class=\"custom-color-blockqute-mark\">&#xe60c;<\/span><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation=&#8221;bottom-to-top&#8221;]Besides Raabia Hawa, Sauer\u2019s own brother, who did an <a href=\"https:\/\/mba.iese.edu\/?_ga=2.77437845.1672173676.1614584590-1550504044.1592205416\">MBA<\/a> at IESE, also became a partner: \u201cTobias was already curious about my trips. He liked the idea so much he joined the team.\u201d And he convinced an IESE PMD classmate, Kai Gradert, to join him on a return trip to Kenya this past summer to experience Walk With Rangers for himself.<\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s still early days, he\u2019s optimistic about the future: \u201cThings may not work out how we want them to be, but it\u2019s all about how we react, adapt, learn, stand up and do it again, but next time better\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His final advice for those contemplating their New Year\u2019s resolutions: \u201cIt\u2019s so easy to stick with what you know, but if you stay too long where you feel comfortable, you won\u2019t achieve any further development. As soon as you feel too comfortable, you need to change something. Keep moving forward. I learned the biggest lessons when I left my comfort zone. Always go for the choice that scares you most\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, he\u2019s heeding his own advice: after eight years with ZF Group, and amidst the launch of his new coffee venture, he recently joined Lilium, the German startup building a flying electric taxi. For Sauer, things are literally starting to take off.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div><style>#thegem-divider-69e49269c523b {margin-top: 35px !important;}<\/style><div id=\"thegem-divider-69e49269c523b\" class=\"gem-divider  \" style=\"\" ><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content_no_spaces&#8221; equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221;][vc_column css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1608564242337{padding-right: 100px !important;padding-left: 100px !important;background-color: #c6c6c6 !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text css_animation=&#8221;bottom-to-top&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Resolutions to change your life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These mottos from Steffen Sauer (PMD \u201919) changed his life. Might they change yours, too?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be consistent:<\/strong> Stand up for what you believe in, but make sure you practice what you preach: this builds trust.<br \/>\nBe yourself: Be the kind of person you would want to meet in life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be inconvenient:<\/strong> Don\u2019t hold back from stating inconvenient truths \u2013 but also propose solutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenge the status quo:<\/strong> Just because you\u2019ve always done things a certain way doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s the best way. Make little improvements every day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be the change you want to see in the world:<\/strong> To change others, start by changing yourself. If others see you willing to make the changes that you\u2019re asking them to make, it\u2019s easier for them to follow suit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leave your comfort zone:<\/strong> Go for the choice that scares you most, rather than the easy option. That will help spur you forward and develop further. If it doesn\u2019t challenge you, it won\u2019t change you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accept failure:<\/strong> We all make mistakes; what matters is how we react. Do you complain and give up? Or do you learn from your mistakes and resolve to do better next time?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow the gold and money will follow:<\/strong> Work for a purpose, to contribute to something bigger: that\u2019s the real gold; money comes after.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do it with passion or not at all:<\/strong> You only live once, so do it now or never.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work abroad:<\/strong> If you get the chance, do it.
