But don\u2019t wait for them to tell you what they need.\u00a0<strong>Anticipate\u00a0<\/strong>their demands, practice\u00a0<strong>active listening,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>offer solutions\u00a0<\/strong>instead of selling products. If you don\u2019t, someone else will. Digitalization has made consumers aware of their power. They compare companies from one day to the next. And many don\u2019t even complain when dissatisfied; they simply choose a different option. The good news is that you can also\u00a0<strong>use digital technologies<\/strong>\u00a0to listen to and interact better with your customers and compete effectively in markets in constant evolution.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"subrat\">2.<\/span> Do you keep an eye on your competitors?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This includes the ones you have today and the ones you could have in the future. Michael Porter\u2019s theses on\u00a0<strong>competitive forces<\/strong>\u00a0are as valid today as ever:\u00a0<strong>the threat isn\u2019t limited to the competition\u00a0<\/strong>exerted by traditional actors in a given sector or industry.Rather,\u00a0<strong>it can take the form of an innovative business model\u00a0<\/strong>(like those based on the\u00a0<strong>collaborative economy<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>a disruptive technology\u00a0<\/strong>(like\u00a0<strong>3D printing<\/strong>) or\u00a0<strong>a radical transformation of distribution channels\u00a0<\/strong>(like the one being led by some\u00a0<strong>digital platforms<\/strong>).The competition is increasingly complex and unpredictable. But, precisely because of this, you have to be sure to keep an eye all fronts: the technology that\u2019s coming, the consumption and purchasing habits that are taking hold, the companies that offer alternative business models\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"subrat\">3.<\/span> Are you constantly making improvements?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The most effective managers and the top businesses never stop asking how they can improve. They question not only<strong>\u00a0<em>how\u00a0<\/em>to do things (operations)<\/strong>, but\u00a0<strong>also\u00a0<em>what<\/em>\u00a0they do\u00a0<\/strong>(their\u00a0<strong>value proposition<\/strong>) and\u00a0<strong>even<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>for whom\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(their\u00a0<strong>target customers<\/strong>). And although there is no general rule for detecting potential improvements in efficiency, there are priority areas where you can act to\u00a0<strong>transform operations<\/strong>\u00a0and turn them into a\u00a0<strong>source of important competitive advantage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"subrat\">4.<\/span> Do you prioritize what\u2019s important, and not just what\u2019s urgent?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Preparing a company for the future is one of a CEO\u2019s most important responsibilities. It\u2019s a task that should never be postponed or delegated. However, it\u2019s very common in the general manager\u2019s day-to-day for the urgent to take precedence over the important. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iese.edu\/standout\/how-to-plan-like-ceo\/\"><strong>general manager\u2019s schedule<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reveals which processes take the largest share of his or her time and which tasks aren\u2019t getting enough attention. Take a look at your schedule and\u00a0<strong>make sure to set aside quality time to think about and work on the future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"subrat\">5.<\/span> Can you communicate your strategy at all levels?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A vision, no matter how brilliant, will never be realized if it\u2019s not shared with and accepted by the rest of the organization. However, there are still many companies and CEOs that tend to\u00a0<em>lock up<\/em>\u00a0the strategy in boardrooms or to share it only with top-level managers. Big mistake.The corporate strategy shouldn\u2019t be treated with the same secrecy as the formula for Coca-Cola. Of course it\u2019s better not to clue in the competition too much. But, as\u00a0<strong>Jaume Llopis<\/strong>\u00a0says,\u00a0<strong>\u201chaving the best strategy in the world means nothing if your team doesn\u2019t\u00a0<em>buy it<\/em>.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Moreover, it\u2019s been shown that\u00a0<strong>employees\u2019 commitment and motivation<\/strong><strong>\u00a0tend to increase when they participate in strategy development by sharing ideas\u00a0<\/strong>and suggestions with their supervisors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iese.edu\/standout\/strategic-thinking-how-to-improve-it\/\">\u00bfHow to improve your strategic thinking?<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"subrat\">6.<\/span> Do you look beyond your own organization?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Keeping up to date on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iese.edu\/standout\/?s=trends\"><strong>business trends<\/strong><\/a>, on changes in\u00a0key sectors\u00a0of the economy and on\u00a0<strong>political, technological, sociocultural and regulatory changes<\/strong>\u00a0is important for being able to glimpse potential market shifts. The general manager\u2019s radar must always be on.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span class=\"subrat\">7.<\/span> Do you sketch out future scenarios?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re not talking about developing multi-year strategic plans (since in such a rapidly changing environment, these become outdated quickly). Instead, we\u2019re talking about\u00a0<strong>imagining an ideal future for the company beyond plans, schedules, and budgets<\/strong>. In order to define this vision for the future, it\u2019s useful to ask yourself questions such as: Where would we like to be in 10, 20 or 30 years? What will our primary activities be? What needs will we have to satisfy? What do we want to be recognized for? Reflecting on these answers will make it easier to reach a shared vision for the company.
