Llewellyn D.W. Thomas es doctor por la Imperial College Business School, tiene un MBA de la Cass Business School y tiene dos licenciaturas de la University of Sydney, uno de las cuales en Derecho. Llewellyn presenta sus investigaciones de forma regular en congresos de primer nivel, tales como la Academy of Management Conference. Ha publicado artículos en revistas de primer nivel, como el Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Industrial and Corporate Change y Academy of Management Perspectives. También ha publicado en otras revistas, como Communications of the ACM, Business Horizons y Telecommunications Policy.

Antes de convertirse en académico, fundó varias empresas, además de trabajar como consultor de gestión especializado en estrategia competitiva y operativa en empresas de servicios financieros, tanto desde su propia consultoría, como liderando la estrategia de información de la consultora BearingPoint UK. Antes de aventurarse en la consultoría de gestión, fue director de estrategia de productos para EMEA en Hummingbird, una empresa de software multinacional canadiense, y director de soluciones de productos en Valid Information Systems, una empresa de software de gestión de la información con sede en Londres, Reino Unido.
