Chicago wins 19th case competition

Last weekend, Chicago Booth Business School became the most recent winner of the IESE-Roland Berger International Case Competition. Since 1996 this meeting of MBA minds has been drawing students from the world’s leading business schools to show off their acumen in resolving business cases. This year, teams from IESE, London Business School, Tuck, Yale, Chicago, HKUSST, CEIBS and INSEAD came together for a healthy dose of competition as they sought the best solution for a business unit trying to carve out a new space for itself in the luxury wine industry.

The 19th International Case Competition that was held over the weekend was won by the team from Chicago Booth Business School. The competition, organized each year by IESE and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, brings together MBA students from the world’s leading business schools to resolve a case study. This year there were teams from IESE, London Business School, Tuck, Yale, Chicago, HKUST, CEIBS and INSEAD.

“At IESE we care about talent and we create frameworks in order to share knowledge between students from around the world. Furthermore, it is more important now than ever that business schools support talented young people because of the role they will play in creating a future sustainable economy,” said Franz Heukamp, director of IESE’s MBA program. He added that “among those taking part in this 19th case competition there are without doubt business leaders of the 21st century.”

The teams comprised four first-year MBA students who spent three days discussing and resolving the IESE case “LVMH's Estates & Wines: A Global Strategy for Luxury Wines?” The case was developed by professors Bruno Cassiman and Fabrizio Ferraro and written by Jordan Mitchell. It looked at the challenges facing Xavier Ybarguengoitia on being named CEO of LVHM Estates & Wines, in particular how he could turn a business unit in decline into a profitable arm of one of the world’s biggest luxury brands.

The students presented their conclusions to a committee of experts made up of Xavier Ybarguengoitia, ex-CEO of LVHM Estates & Wines; Per Breuer, partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in Munich; Hans Nyctelius, partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in Stockholm, and the independent expert Jorge A. Grosse MacDougall.

The case competition is further evidence of IESE and Roland Berger’s commitment to developing and sharing international talent; it’s another step in the education of future business leaders in Europe, North America and Asia and is an event that promotes learning, an exchange of ideas, teamwork and a healthy dose of competition.
