The Chancellor of the University of Navarra and prelate of Opus Dei, Monseigneur Javier Echevarría, has died in Rome at the age of 84.

Responding to the news, the Dean of IESE, Franz Heukamp, recalled the Chancellor’s visit to IESE in 2008 to mark the school’s 50th anniversary. At the time, he highlighted the important mission of IESE to develop business leaders within the context of the values of Christian humanism.

“IESE’s work in developing business leaders constitutes a call to many men and women to align themselves to this beautiful ideal.”

Monseigneur Echevarría remained very close to the work of IESE across the world, in our campuses in Barcelona, Madrid, New York and Munich. He also spent time regularly in the Pamplona campus of the University of Navarra, and latterly as a patient of the University Clinic of Navarra.

The president of the University of Navarra, Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero, said that the Chancellor very much appreciated the “advances being made in faculties, research centers and the Museum. And he always gave us his full encouragement whenever we experienced difficulties and doubts.”

In these moments of pain and great suffering, the IESE community would like to extend our gratitude for his work, and join with the prayers being offered for his soul around the world.
