New research center to focus on talent management strategies

“The priority, for us, is not our factories, nor is it the formula of our perfumes. What matters most to us is people.”

This was the clear message shared by Mariano Puig, ex-president of the Puig Group at the presentation of the Puig Chair of Global Leadership Development celebrated recently at the IESE Barcelona campus.

Joining him were Marc Puig, president of the Puig Group, IESE Dean Jordi Canals and Prof. Marta Elvira, the new Chair holder and associate dean for research at IESE.

“This Chair marks the commitment both of IESE and Puig to the development of responsible, international leadership with a focus on people with a strong commitment to society,” said Canals.

Prof. Elvira explained that part of the Puig Chair’s mission is to create a “hub of knowledge and practice with international impact, to help understand and apply theory and management policy on leadership development by global companies.”

“The Chair will foster knowledge generation for effective human capital strategies; strategies that enable firms to drive long-term economic growth and social progress precisely through the development of responsible global leadership,” said Elvira.

Mariano Puig paid tribute to IESE’s role in the development of the Puig Group over the last 50 years, educating both its owners and its directors. “IESE has been part of making Puig the prestigious international company that it is today,” he said, adding that is the reason for the creation of the chair and the focus on talent development.

“Leadership development is paramount. How companies define and execute their human capital strategy differentiates great companies from the rest in the long term,” said Marc Puig.

“The board of directors and the advisory board have a clear responsibility to develop our future managers.”


A Leadership Think Tank

As well as research, the Puig Chair provides a forum for debate between business leaders and academics, in terms of a leadership think tank. It will also develop educational activities within the PhD, MBA and Executive Education Programs, and publish findings in specialist journals, business forums, conferences and the media.

The Puig Chair will pursue three principal lines of research:

  • Leadership development and human capital strategies to deliver sustainable competitive advantage.

  • How companies can develop diverse, inter-generational and engaged workforce for the long term.

  • Identifying best practices in leadership development adopted by globally successful companies.

The new Puig Chair of Global Leadership development takes its place among IESE’s 14 research centers and 23 chairs, each led by an internationally prominent professor.

IESE chairs are groups of professors who are dedicated to pushing the boundaries in theoretical and practical knowledge, and sharing their research findings as widely as possible. Chairs are also financial funds that are maintained over the long term, that generate income which is used to recapitalize the chair, maintain its value and finance its activities.
