PhD in Management

Why do a PhD at IESE

At IESE we give our PhD students the opportunity to research relevant topics with theoretical depth. This is delivered through:

  • The school’s humanistic approach and emphasis on advancing management practice
  • Training in both quantitative and qualitative methods
  • The broad company and international access through our alumni network and our close association

Students also benefit from the personal attention that we give to each and every participant through:

  • Regular personalized advice
  • Ongoing assessment of each student’s academic progress
  • An open and accessible Faculty. This translates into joint conference presentations and publications

To complement all of this, IESE as an institution features broad diversity amongst its faculty both in terms of nationality and academic interest. The school has a broad geographical reach, delivering programs across the world, primarily at our campuses in Barcelona and Madrid but also at our center in New York and our offices in Munich and Sao Paolo. Our PhD students are primarily based on our Barcelona campus, which gives them excellent networking opportunities with top academic and business leaders who help inform and guide research.

All PhD students at IESE begin their PhD by completing the Master of Research in Management (MRM). This then leads into the PhD in Management. The aim of both programs is to prepare students for research careers in academic environments. Initial coursework for the PhD Program is carried out within the framework of the MRM. Thus, while the MRM can be completed independently, it is a pre-requisite for the PhD Program.

Why a PhD in Management?

A PhD in Management is an engaging and enriching experience for anyone embarking on the path to become a professor at a business school. A PhD provides students with the knowledge and tools to be at the forefront of an exciting field of research.

Furthermore, it is the gateway to an interesting and diverse profession. Business school professors combine scholarly work within their chosen fields of expertise with teaching in a highly stimulating environment. Few professions offer the diversity, freedom, and economic independence that a career as faculty member of a business school offers.
