Franz Heukamp is the dean of IESE and a professor of decision analysis. He holds the Antonio Valero Chair of Business Administration.
Dean Heukamp received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specializing in decision analysis and neuroeconomics. He holds engineering degrees from the Technische Universität München and the École des Ponts et Chaussées.
He joined the IESE faculty in 2002 and was secretary general between 2009 and 2012. From 2012 to 2016, he was associate dean for MBA programs. He became dean in September 2016.
Among his areas of interest are the future of work and decision-making amid uncertainty, in light of ongoing changes in society as a whole. His teaching specialties are decision analysis and forecasting methods, a field he describes as combining analytical aspects with more human and personal elements: that despite analytic data, the person is at the center of decision-making, with psychology and personality playing crucial roles.
Dean Heukamp has identified a number of key issues to address in the school’s development going forward:
“In the future we will deepen our presence in North America, Latin America and Central Europe. Given the importance of Asia, we also will work to reinforce our presence and activities in the region.”
Meeting the challenges of lifelong learning
“With globalization, digitization and the lengthening of working careers, lifelong learning is more and more necessary. IESE must continuously ensure that our programs meet the needs of business leaders throughout their professional lives.”
The impact of digitization on learning and development
“IESE must equip the next generation of leaders with the knowledge and capabilities they will need to confront tomorrow’s challenges. We believe that the best learning methodology is personal interaction and class discussion, but we have also witnessed the benefits of blended learning, which incorporates online elements and other technologies. Combining both worlds, we will continue developing cutting-edge methodologies that allow us to offer the best solution for each educational need.”
Deep impact on society
“My wish is that IESE continue with its mission to serve society in general and the business world in particular, through innovation and academic activities that address the new challenges of our time.”
