Chair of Family-Owned Business

Holder: Marta Elvira

The Chair of Family-Owned Business is the first of its kind in Europe, and is aimed at promoting and supporting family business and business family initiatives. Since its creation in 1987, it has contributed with its research and publications to widening knowledge about different aspects of the family-owned business, at both national and international levels.

To distribute the results of its research, the Chair participates in numerous conferences, research meetings and other training activities. It organizes a regular specific cycle on family-owned businesses in the IESE Alumni Learning Program. The members of the team collaborate on diverse IESE Focused Programs, sharing their knowledge and research results at In Family Business, the Chair knowledge portal.

Holder of the Chair

Marta Elvira is professor of Strategic Management & Managing People in Organizations at IESE, where she has served as associate dean for Research and PhD Program. She holds a PhD from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. Before joining IESE she was Academic Dean in Lexington College (Chicago), associate professor of management in the University of California, Irvine, and INSEAD (France). She was also a visiting professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and Monterrey TEC (Mexico). Her teaching and research focus on topics of general management, corporate governance, and leadership, with a particular emphasis on organizational incentives, social inequality, and the future of work. Marta has been a member of several journal editorial boards including Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal and The Journal of World Business. She has lectured in numerous universities across continents, published three books and dozens of articles in scientific journals, edited three books, and received support for her research from institutions such as the Sloan Foundation and the European Commission Programme Marie Curie. She has advices companies in diverse sectors and countries including some Fortune 500 firms concerning issues of general management, leadership and organization.
